New Orleans Creole Studies ConferenceOctober 23-25, 2003 The Creole Studies Conference held in New Orleans this past October has proven to be a major success. It evolved into three full days of information exchange and celebration of the Creole culture. A truly significant part of this event was the proclamation of Creole Heritage Day in New Orleans by the governing council of that great city. This proclamation was issued in honor of Dr. Krueger Normand who represented all that was presented as a part of this conference. Shown to the right is Dr. Guessler Normand paying homage to his brother’s memory. The goal of this conference was to identify the research that has been and is currently being done in Louisiana Creole studies; and to determine the most fruitful avenues for future research. Now that a start has been made in that direction, more targeted and comprehensive outreach programs will be offered. The Center is in the process of investigating the most prudent and expeditious way of documenting this past conference for publication and distribution purposes. In the meantime, a photo gallery depicting some of the conference activities has been placed online here. |

An expanded version of this event will take place with some activities starting as early as the Wednesday or Thursday before. Although some workshops and other presentations will take place on the campus at Northwestern University, other activities will still be held at St. Augustine’s Catholic church on Cane River which will also be the site of the annual church fair. The annual tour of homes, sponsored by the Association for Preservation of Natchitoches, will also take place during this time. More information regarding this event will be posted as soon as schedules are finalized. |
A new option has been included as part of this website. It is entitled “Support the Center” and may be accessed here. This option presents various Creole Heritage Center publications and other items for purchase as well as the ability to make an online donation. Featured are the current published volumes of the Creole Chronicles as well as the recently developed film on Creole cuisine. All of the proceeds gained from these purchases will be used to support outreach programming and publications. SUPPORT THE CENTER |
